Down duvets

A good night's sleep has a positive effect on your physical and mental health. The quality of your bedding contributes to this, so we know how important a comfortable duvet is. Looking for a wonderful down duvet to snuggle into? Then Bath is the place for you.&Living at the right address.

Our down duvets are from the Vandyck brand. This is a Dutch company with over a hundred years of experience in home textiles and over forty years of experience with bed linen. In Bath&In the Living range you will find duvets, pillows, mattress protectors, fitted sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, bedspreads, bathrobes and towels from Vandyck.

Why choose a down duvet?

A down duvet can be quite an investment, so it's understandable that you might wonder why you'd choose a down duvet. Firstly, a down duvet is wonderfully warm, yet feels light and airy against your body. Even if you sweat easily, perspiration will be absorbed by the down and wicked to the top of the duvet. A synthetic duvet might be just as warm, but it quickly becomes clammy because it retains heat and lacks breathability. This causes you to toss and turn in your sleep, searching for a cooler spot in your bed, resulting in a chaotic night's sleep and a less rested feeling. A wool duvet can also fall into the same warmth category, but it feels much heavier and is less supple, potentially creating gaps that let in the cold.

Secondly, a down duvet lasts much longer than one made of wool or synthetic materials. So, although the initial purchase price of a down duvet is higher than that of duvets with other fillings, it pays for itself in the long run. With proper care, a down duvet can last up to 10 years before its quality begins to decline.

Thirdly, down is allergy-friendly. Allergic reactions are often caused by bacteria and dust mites. The down used by Vandyck is dust-free in an environmentally friendly way and is heated to 120 degrees Celsius. This prevents bacteria from developing. Combined with a tightly woven cover, a down duvet is not a favorable environment for dust mites.

The outside of the duvet

Speaking of the cover: all our down duvets have an outer layer of 100% high-quality cotton. Whether it's combed cotton, sateen cotton, or mako cotton varies per duvet. This makes every down duvet in our range a 100% natural product. And sleeping in a natural environment is so pleasant, as it contributes to optimal body temperature regulation.

Why not a down duvet?

While we highly recommend down duvets, there are also reasons why you might not choose a down duvet. Fortunately, you'll also find other high-quality duvets without down filling in our selection. Take a look at our washable duvets, which can be mentioned as the first disadvantage of a down duvet: they are often not machine washable.

The price could also be a reason to avoid a down duvet. Down—and especially goose down—is an expensive product, and the price is proportional to the quality. The higher the down percentage, the more expensive the duvet.

Another possible reason for not choosing down is ethical. Since down comes from geese and ducks, it's an animal product. If you want to avoid animal products—for example, because you want to live a vegan lifestyle—a down duvet filling wouldn't be your best option.

Different types of down

A down duvet can be filled with different types of down, namely the down feathers of geese or ducks. Duck down is generally cheaper, but a goose down duvet has a better reputation. And rightly so, because the quality of goose down is higher than that of duck down. This is because goose feathers are larger, have more fluff on the underside, and therefore provide more volume without adding weight to your duvet (higher fill power). Goose down insulates better, has a higher moisture absorption rate, and is better at wicking moisture away. Furthermore, duck down is more likely to puncture the duvet cover and is less resilient than goose down, resulting in a shorter lifespan.

Down versus feathers

When you list these properties, you can see that a goose down duvet is definitely worth it. All our Vandyck down duvets are made with goose down. Although we only use one duvet made of 100% goose down Most of the duvets in our collection are filled with a blend of down and feathers. The difference between feathers and down feathers is that down feathers are fluffier and have a soft stem or none at all. This makes them wonderfully soft, provides better insulation, and makes them warmer. Regular feathers have a more tactile texture and make your duvet a bit heavier.

The origin of down

Vandyck down duvets don't contain recycled down, but authentic Bohemian and Canadian goose down. The best quality down comes from Eastern Europe and North America because these regions experience harsh winters. So, you should also consider this when searching for the best down duvet.

Responsible down

All Vandyck down duvets are Downpass certified. Downpass certification guarantees high quality and ensures that the down feathers have been ethically sourced. Vandyck down products are produced in a strictly controlled supply chain, guaranteed by the Downpass certificate. Live-plucking of geese is non-existent, and the conditions on the farms are excellent. Vandyck also has this verified on-site by its own staff.

Percentage of down

As mentioned, most down duvets are filled with a combination of down and feathers. The more down, the more resilient and comfortable the duvet. And the higher the down percentage, the warmer the duvet while maintaining its light weight. Therefore, the down percentage is a key indicator of a duvet's quality. Most common down duvets are filled with a percentage of 65 to 90%, supplemented with feathers.

Comfort class

However, it's not just the warmth and insulation value that matters. The overall quality of a down duvet stems from the interplay between its insulation capacity, weight, thickness, and softness. These properties are determined by the entire duvet; both the filling and the cover surrounding the filling. That's why Vandyck considers not only the down percentage and the warmth rating important, but also the overall comfort rating. You can read all about this in the text accompanying our duvet collection.

Lovely warm 4-season down duvet

At Bath&Living offers a variety of down duvet sizes, suitable for a single bed, a double bed (small double), or an even larger bed (twin). Each duvet type comes in a solo and duo version. The solo version is a single duvet and is often sufficient if you live in a well-insulated house. This ensures a fairly consistent temperature in your bedroom, whether it's summer or winter.

The duo or 4 seasons duvet consists of two parts, one of which has a higher warmth class than the other. In other words, one duvet for spring and summer, one for autumn, and when combined, they form a winter duvet that will keep you warm and comfortable even in an older house during cold winter nights. The two parts are easily attached to prevent slippage.

Down summer duvet

You might think of a down duvet as warmth, but a down summer duvet also provides a wonderful night's sleep. Especially in summer, the light weight, moisture regulation, and ventilation of a down duvet are very pleasant. Summer 95 duvet Contains 95% down. The twin duvet weighs only 385 grams, which is even lighter than most single down duvets. With this duvet, you can enjoy the quality of down even in the warmer months while staying cool and comfortable.

Maintaining a down duvet

A down duvet doesn't require much maintenance. We recommend shaking the duvet daily to keep the down feathers plump, but avoid beating it. If necessary, you can remove lint when changing your duvet cover. Don't use a vacuum cleaner for this, but use a soft brush. You can air out your duvet, but not in direct sunlight, as this can dry out the feathers.

Do you think your duvet needs a more thorough cleaning? Then you can have it dry-cleaned. Unfortunately, you can't put almost any down duvet in the washing machine or dryer at home.

We recommend against sitting on your bed with your duvet on top. This can cause the down feathers to break and lose their resilience.
