Why is the right duvet size important?
A good question: why is the size of duvet you choose so important? The size of your duvet matters because it affects your comfort while sleeping. And the quality of your night's rest impacts your overall health. Naturally, we don't want to skimp on that!
If you choose a duvet that is too small, gaps may form when you toss and turn at night, and you will wake up feeling chilly. This is especially true if you are a restless sleeper or share a bed with a partner. So, choose a wider duvet, but don't overdo it. A duvet that is too large is harder to tuck in. It can also cause too much of the duvet to hang off the sides of your bed. This can pull due to the hanging weight, making it difficult for you to keep the duvet on the bed while you sleep.
In addition to practical matters such as comfort and preventing cold spots while sleeping, a duvet in the right size looks neat in your bedroom. The same applies to your duvet cover and fitted sheet; in the correct size, these contribute to sleeping comfort and a well-groomed appearance.
How do you determine the size of your duvet?
The dimensions of your bed are not that important for determining your duvet size, because your bed may have wide edges or a headboard and footboard. What determines the size of duvet you need are the width and length of your mattress. So, first make sure you choose a mattress in the size that suits you and use this as a basis to determine which duvet size you need. We recommend choosing a duvet that is at least 40 cm wider than your mattress, but 60 cm ensures optimal comfort and sufficient wiggle room. This gives you an overhang of 30 cm on both sides. This provides sufficient freedom of movement and looks neat on your bed.
The standard mattress sizes are as follows:
Single mattress: 90x200 cm
Double mattress: 140x200 cm
twin mattress: 160x200 cm
Take into account possible deviations from these dimensions, so always measure carefully. Although 200 cm is the standard mattress length, there are also many mattresses with a length of 210 or 220 cm. This provides extra comfort and is a must for taller people (taller than 1.80 m). Ensure that the length of your duvet at least matches your mattress length. Or choose a longer duvet if you have a thick mattress or a box spring with a topper.
What is the right duvet size for a single bed?
A single bed is generally 90 cm wide and 200 cm long, with a duvet of 140 x 200 cm is a nice size. This standard single duvet size also fits a single bed that is narrower or 10 cm wider. So 70, 80, or 100 cm. Do you have a single bed with extra length? Then choose a single duvet of 140x220 cm. A single duvet of 140 x 200 cm is really intended for one person and is therefore not comfortable for two people to sleep under.
What size duvet for a 140x200 bed?
A 140x200 cm bed is a small double bed or a twin bed. A width of 140 cm offers extra space and comfort for one person, but it is also suitable for two people to sleep in. A twin bed duvet is generally 200x200 cm. A double duvet of this size is less suitable for a bed that is wider than 140 cm. In that case, choose a duvet that is one size larger. A 200x200 cm double duvet will fit on smaller twin beds that are 120 or 130 cm wide.
Twin beds: 2 separate or 1 large duvet?
As mentioned, a standard double duvet does not fit a larger size double bed. For a bed at least 160 cm wide, you need a lits jumeaux duvet. The dimensions of a lits jumeaux duvet are 240x200 cm or 240x220 cm, depending on the length of your mattress. A lits jumeaux duvet with these dimensions is suitable for a large double bed up to 180 cm wide.
Instead of one large double duvet, you can also opt for two 140x200 cm duvets. This is often done by couples where one partner gets warm more easily than the other and therefore requires a different type of duvet. For example, a bamboo filling or a lighter down filling is pleasant in this case. In this instance, also ensure you have two separate duvet covers with dimensions of 140x200/220 cm.
What is a lits jumeaux XL?
For an even larger bed that is wider than 180 cm, you need a lits jumeaux XL duvet. This is also known as a king-size duvet and measures 260x220 cm. We do not have this wide duvet in our standard range, but we can order it for you from Vandyck. The same applies to the duvet covers that match this size. Our Jersey fitted sheets go up to size 200x220 cm and are wonderfully soft and elastic. They are therefore suitable for the mattress of a king-size bed.
Which size duvet cover goes with my duvet?
A new duvet alone isn't enough. Of course, you need a beautiful duvet cover to go with it! Fortunately, the cover collection at Bath is&Living is incredibly spacious and versatile. Choose from various materials for the comfort that suits you and discover the many colors and designs to transform your bedroom. We have a matching duvet cover for all different duvet sizes.
But what size duvet cover do you need then? For a single duvet measuring 140x200 cm or 140x220 cm, choose a cover of 140x220 cm. A double duvet of 200x200 cm fits a cover of 200x220 cm. A king-size duvet cover of 240x220 cm is suitable for duvets of 240x200 cm and 240x220 cm.
As you can see, the width measurements always correspond, but a duvet cover can be longer than your duvet. After all, a 220 cm duvet will not fit in a 200 cm long duvet cover, but any duvet will fit in a 220 cm cover. That is why the size of a duvet cover is sometimes noted in this way: 240x200/220 cm. This is to indicate that the duvet cover fits both 200 cm and 220 cm long duvets. You can use the optional extra length of 20 cm, together with the tuck-in flap, to neatly tuck in your cover. All Vandyck duvet covers are made with a wide, spacious bottleneck tuck-in flap.
