Why is the right size duvet important?
A good question: why is choosing the right size duvet so important? The size of your duvet matters because it affects your comfort while sleeping. And the quality of your sleep affects your overall health. Of course, we don't want to compromise on that!
If you choose a duvet that's too small, you risk creating gaps when you toss and turn at night, and you'll wake up feeling chilly. This is especially true if you're a restless sleeper or share a bed with your partner and have to share the covers. So choose a wider duvet, but don't overdo it. A duvet that's too large is harder to tuck in. It can also cause excess duvet weight to hang off the bed. This can cause the weight to pull, forcing you to try to keep the duvet in place while you sleep.
Besides practical benefits like comfort and preventing cold spots while sleeping, a duvet in the right size looks neat in your bedroom. This also applies to your duvet cover and fitted sheet; the right size contributes to both sleeping comfort and a neat appearance.
How do you determine the size of your duvet?
Your bed's dimensions aren't as important for determining your duvet size, as your bed may have wide sides or a headboard and footboard. The width and length of your mattress are the determining factors for the duvet size you need. So, first choose a mattress that fits you and use that as a basis for determining your duvet size. We recommend choosing a duvet that's at least 40 cm wider than your mattress, but 60 cm provides optimal comfort and sufficient space. This gives you a 30 cm overhang on each side. This gives you plenty of room to move and looks neat on your bed.
The standard sizes of mattresses are as follows:
Single mattress: 90x200 cm
Double mattress: 140x200 cm
twin mattress: 160x200 cm
Please take into account possible deviations from these dimensions, so always measure them again.While 200 cm is the standard length for a mattress, many mattresses are also 210 or 220 cm long. This provides extra comfort and is essential for taller people (over 1.80 m). Make sure the length of your duvet at least matches the length of your mattress. Or choose a longer duvet if you have a thick mattress or a box spring with a topper.
What is the correct duvet size for a single bed?
A single bed is generally 90 cm wide and 200 cm long, with a duvet of 140 x 200 cm A good size. This standard duvet size for single duvets also fits a single bed that is narrower or 10 cm wider. So, 70, 80, or 100 cm. Do you have a single bed with extra length? Then choose a single duvet from 140x220 cmA single duvet measuring 140 x 200 cm is really meant for one person and therefore not comfortable for two people to sleep under.
What size duvet for a bed 140x200?
A 140x200 cm bed is a small double bed or a three-quarter bed. A width of 140 cm offers extra space and comfort for one person, but it can also accommodate two people. A three-quarter duvet is generally 200x200 cmA double duvet of this size is less suitable for a bed over 140 cm wide. In that case, choose a duvet one size larger. A double duvet 200x200 cm will fit smaller double beds of 120 or 130 cm wide.
Twin beds: 2 separate or 1 large duvet?
As mentioned, a regular double duvet won't fit a larger double bed. For a bed at least 160 cm wide, you need a twin duvet. The dimensions of a twin duvet are: 240x200 cm or 240x220 cm, depending on the length of your mattress. A double duvet with these dimensions is suitable for a large double bed up to 180 cm wide.
Instead of one large double duvet, you can also choose two 140x200 cm duvets. This is often done by couples where one person gets warm faster than the other and therefore needs a different type of duvet. For example, a bamboo or lighter down filling would be nice. In this case, also make sure you have two separate duvet covers measuring 140x200/220 cm.
What is a twin bed XL?
For an even larger bed, wider than 180 cm, you'll need a double XL duvet. This is also called a king-size duvet and measures 260x220 cm. We don't stock such a wide duvet as standard, but we can order it for you from Vandyck. The same goes for the duvet covers that go with this size. Our Jersey fitted sheets go up to 200x220 cm and are wonderfully soft and stretchy. They are therefore suitable for a king-size mattress.
What size duvet cover fits my duvet?
A new duvet alone isn't enough. Of course, you also need a beautiful duvet cover! Luckily, the duvet cover collection at Bath is available.&The living room is incredibly spacious and versatile. Choose from a variety of materials for the comfort that suits you best and discover the many colors and designs to transform your bedroom. We have a matching duvet cover for every duvet size.
But what size duvet cover do you need? For a single duvet measuring 140x200 cm or 140x220 cm, choose a 140x220 cm cover. For a double duvet measuring 200x200 cm, a 200x220 cm cover is suitable. A 240x220 cm double duvet cover is suitable for duvets measuring 240x200 cm and 240x220 cm.
As you can see, the width measurements are always the same, but a duvet cover can be longer than your duvet. A 200 cm duvet cover won't fit a 220 cm duvet, but a 220 cm duvet cover will fit any duvet. That's why the size of a duvet cover is sometimes noted as 240x200/220 cm. This indicates that the duvet cover fits both 200 cm and 220 cm duvets. You can use the extra 20 cm length, along with the tuck-in flap, to neatly tuck in your duvet cover. All Vandyck duvet covers are made with a wide, roomy bottleneck as a tuck-in flap.
