Poke bowl recipe
Despite the name Poké, these bowls are of course suitable for all kinds of dishes such as soups, pastas, salads, curries or oatmeal porridge.
Still, we can't resist sharing some ideas for your own poke bowl. A poke bowl is a quick meal to prepare, allowing you to easily change or add ingredients to suit your taste.
The basics
The base of a poke bowl is generally rice. Choose your favorite type of rice, or go wild and use quinoa or noodles as the base!
You can flavor the (rice) base with rice vinegar to which some (brown) sugar and salt have been dissolved. For a surprising mouthfeel, serve the rice warm and the other ingredients cold.
The leading role
Originally, super-fresh, raw fish was used. Think salmon, tuna, herring, or mackerel from the fishmonger. For a slightly simpler version, try smoked salmon, cooked shrimp, or canned tuna. Don't like fish? Then choose tofu, tempeh, or even crispy chicken pieces.
As a dressing or marinade for the fish you can use ingredients such as sesame oil, soy sauce, wasabi and lime juice.
Vegetables
Ideally, use fresh, crisp vegetables to complement the warm rice and tender fish. Think cucumber, julienned carrots and radishes, crispy red cabbage, bean sprouts, bell peppers, and soybeans (edamame). To make your meal more filling and hearty, avocado, mushrooms, and roasted pumpkin are also delicious options.
Provide bite-sized vegetables. This makes eating with chopsticks much easier, if you prefer.
Toppings
You might have thought you were done, but toppings really complete your poke bowl! For an extra kick, add jalapeño or chili flakes. For a surprising crunch, fried onions or chopped nuts are delicious. In terms of taste, ingredients such as spring onion, fresh mint or coriander, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, nori or wakame (seaweed) go very well with a poke bowl.
The finishing touch could be a sauce, such as Japanese mayonnaise (perhaps mixed with wasabi) or sriracha.
