Which bath mat material do you choose?
In terms of materials, you have a number of choices in the Bath&Living assortment. For example, there are soft bath mats made of synthetic materials such as polyester or acrylic, bath mats made of 100% cotton, or a mix of cotton and synthetic material. Cotton bath mat
The advantage of cotton is that it is a natural material, has excellent moisture absorption, and also dries quickly. Due to its high absorption, among other things, cotton is a popular choice for bath mats. This is convenient if you use your bath mat to step onto while wet after getting out of the shower or bath. However, keep in mind that not all cotton is the same. For instance, our range extends from the thin Ranger hotel mat at just 750 grams/m² to the high-pile Alma bath mat at 2,800 grams/m². Even though cotton has fine moisture-absorbing properties, wet feet have a greater effect on the look of a thick, high-pile bath mat than on a thin, low-pile one.
Synthetic bath mats
Another material that dries quite quickly is acrylic. The “old-fashioned” bath mat with durable quality that lasted for years was also made of acrylic. This is because acrylic is wear-resistant and colorfast. An acrylic bath mat retains its color and quality longer, making it an ideal material for a bath mat. Which bath mat is practical?
In addition to the look and feel of your bath mat, there are a few other important aspects to consider when purchasing a new one. How important is anti-slip to you? What size is ideal for your bathroom? And also, whether or not your bath mat is machine washable. All the bath mats in our assortment can be washed at a minimum of 30 degrees.
Bath mat size
The size of your bath mat is indeed important and must suit the space in your bathroom. A bath mat that is too small or too large can look very odd in the room. However, how big your bath mat should be does not depend solely on the size of your bathroom space. It is aesthetically pleasing if the size of your bath mat is in balance with the dimensions of your bathroom vanity and/or sink.
A rectangular bath mat measuring 60 by 90 or 100 cm is a fairly standard size and the most common choice. However, nowadays many bathrooms are designed with a beautiful double washbasin and, consequently, quite a wide vanity unit. In that case, we recommend a fairly large bath mat. Fortunately, there are plenty of those to be found in our assortment. We even have extra large bath mats of 70x120 cm or 80x160 cm.
Of course, we also have small bath mats for compact spaces. However, bath mats with this compact size are not intended solely for the toilet. Even if you do not have the luxury of a spacious bathroom, a small bath mat still adds extra comfort.
Anti-slip or not?
A good non-slip bath mat has more grip on the smooth tiles of your bathroom floor and therefore prevents the mat from sliding. You can find bath mats with premium, medium, light, and no non-slip properties. Premium is the strongest non-slip layer and is the most common in our range. A non-slip bath mat often has a latex underside. However, a mat with natural rubber, thermoplastic rubber (TPR), or silicone studs also stays firmly in place. The higher the degree of non-slip, the better the bath mat stays in place and the less risk of slipping you have.
However, for some people, opting for a bath mat without a non-slip backing can be a conscious choice. The advantage of this is that the fabric is more flexible and dries faster. For families with small children, we do not necessarily recommend a non-slip bath mat, given the extra safety. But if only adults live in your home, it is a fine option. Or choose a combination where you place a non-slip shower mat in front of the shower and a luxurious, soft bath mat in front of your bathroom vanity, possibly without a non-slip layer.
Can you wash the bath mat?
Although a bath mat is the perfect styling tool for your bathroom, it is simply a functional item. You likely step on your bath mat several times a day. And the more people living in the house, the more feet touch the bath mat, and the greater the chance of residue from body creams and hairsprays. That is why it is nice to be able to wash your bath mat thoroughly every week or two. The ease of maintenance of a bath mat is important, because a clean bath mat is a beautiful bath mat.
All bath mats in our range can be machine washed at a minimum of 30 degrees Celsius. Some can also be washed at 40 or even 60 degrees. For most, however, it is recommended to place the bath mat in a laundry bag to minimize wear on the fibers. Most bath mats can also be tumble dried, but only at a low temperature. Always check the washing label for this. Read all our tips for safely and effectively washing your bath mat. For example, use only a small amount of washing powder and no harsh chemicals such as chlorine-based cleaning agents for bath mats.
